One of the best hikes in the world is the trek to the lake at the base of the Torres Del Paine, here in Chilean Patagonia. It is 12 miles round trip, over 3000 ft of climbing, and takes about 8 hours. The Torres area is known for bad weather with high winds, and lots of clouds that bury the mountains so that nothing can be seen, so the weather I have encountered here in Chilean Patagonia has been unusual and spectacular.
